Anabaptism was a 16th-century radical renewal movement that insisted the church should be free from state control. Anabaptists emphasised discipleship, community, social justice, sharing resources, non-violence and the centrality of Jesus as teacher and Lord as well as Saviour. Persecuted by both Catholics and Protestants, they survived, became refugees and eventually found places to settle and thrive. Many became known as Mennonites after one of the early leaders, Menno Simons. Anabaptism is now a global movement and the Anabaptist vision inspires Christians from many traditions and in many nations. In Britain and Ireland, the Anabaptist Mennonite Network offers resources to those interested in learning more and fosters connections with others who are also inspired by this vision.
